Hi all,

1. have you exported
XDG_CONFIG_DIRS=/etc/gnome/xdg
2. have you executed this
update-desktop-database
I did export all that plus XDG_DATA_DIRS as well but to no avail. The
'Control Center' continues to show a blank window and there are no icons
or applications.
Upon 'update-desktop-database' I get the reply: "No files in the search
path were updated...etc."
I do'nt know what it means.
Any fresh ideas?

Guessing that these weren't set at build time? Sounds very similar to
my issues the other day. As asked previously, how far did you go into
the Gnome install? And here are my settings, only a guess, but try in
this order:
# Assuming GNOME_PREFIX=/usr
export XDG_DATA_HOME=/usr/share
export XDG_DATA_DIRS=/usr/share:/etc/gnome/xdg
export XDG_CONFIG_DIRS=/etc/gnome/xdg
update-desktop-database

I have the GNOME_PREFIX=/opt/gnome, and have exported accordingly.
This brings up an interesting scenario. Have you installed any
of the GNOME-1.4 libraries?
If so, and you followed the book, you'd have a conflict that may or
may not be responsible for some of your problems.
This won't be an issue after tonight, as I'm wrapping up the
conversion of the GNOME-1.4 libs to install in /opt/gnome-1.4 and
we'll have /opt/gnome reserved now for the current version of
GNOME-2.

No. I have not installed any GNOME-1.4 libraries. Thanks.
Hi all,
Further to my last despatch, I have completed installtion of Gnome Core
Packages, for the second time, (I suspect and also as Lucas thought, the
second install was redundant--price of ignorance!) and also installed
selected Additional Packages. As suggested by DJ Lucas, I have set the
various environment variables as under:
export XDG_DATA_HOME=/opt/gnome
export XDG_DATA_DIRS=/usr/share:/opt/gnome:/etc/gnome/xdg
export XDG_CONFIG_DIRS=/etc/gnome/xdg
update-desktop-database
Also, I have set the inittab to boot in runlevel 5 and have set it to " Run
'gdm' as a separate service".
The GNOME response is as below, now:
1.The system now boots into Gnome and gdm offers login window.
2.The desktop backgrounds are very limited and unimpressive---nothing like
what KDE offers. 'No Wallpaper' setting produces light green background.
Wallpaqpers are limited and unimpressive too.
3.'Gnome Control Center', when started from its icon, produces a blank
window but when started from the command-line works ok.
4. 'gfloppy' icon is missing but starts with any icon allotted to it. But it
has a fixed setting for formatting, only in ext2 filesystem. The drop-down
button for choosing 'dos' is inoperative. It formats in ext2 allright.
4.'libglade' type of icons do not comeup.
5.'gedit' works but its original icon is missing.
6. 'update-desktop-database' command produces no error now.
Any remedies please?
Regards.
