I used pop forwarding from gmail for a while with mutt and never had
that problem. It is an option in most mailers. There is also a mutt
option to allow you to automatically send a cc to somewhere (e.g. to
yourself). If you had that set, you would have seen your reply anyhow.
These sort of options are common.

This is becoming a gmail question. Are you sure there are no such
'cc to self' options in your mailer?
