Oh, I agree, "make install" is the real culprit here and should be fixed; but pending that fix I think the BLFS audience needs to know about the bug and workaround. As to why it doesn't work (or works differently), that's going to take some research. Now that I have a working install, which was my first goal, I can spend some time running some controlled experiments (i.e., start with a regular "make install" using all command-line options, then compare that control result with what happens when I change each factor individually). It might make the results more meaningful if several people do this and compare whether different platforms (Linux? Windows? GTK1 vs. GTK2?) produce different results. -- Peter B.
