Thought of something else too.. /etc/asound.state may not have been
updated when you removed the dummy sequencer from the kernel and could
be causing problems. You could try removing the file and then restoring
it with:
rm -f /etc/asound.state &&
touch /etc/asound.state &&
alsa-ctl store
