Well, as you suspect this is almost always caused from mis-configured
TrueType fonts.

Everything looks normal. Can you run the following commands and post
the output:
grep Load /etc/X11/xorg.conf (substitute the correct XFree filename)
grep FontPath etc/X11/xorg.conf (substitute the correct XFree filename)
xlsfonts | head
