Are you following the book by putting _only_ "exec startkde" in your
.xinitrc, or are you trying to start kde from an already running X
session with twm ?

Like others, I think these messages are harmless

google suggests this might be associated with using nvidia drivers, or
flakey setup of user account, and is probably associated with some loss
of eye candy.

this might be more catastrophic, possibly a problem in your font
configuration.  Check the archives for people's fontconfig problems
(usually affects gnome users).

Hopefully, just a misleading error message ( e.g. the font error wasn't
expected).

Yes, I've only got "exec startkde" in my .xinitrc.  I've also tried -nolisten inet6 originally to make those IPv6 messages to go away.  In addition, I've rebuilt both fontconfig and freetype to try to fix the font problem.  I've even followed all the instructions in the xfree86-setup BLFS page a number of times... Either there is some weird conflict with my Nvidia driver install, or I've missed something else.

Thanks,

Sean
