Have you installed Mplayer? You may want to install xvidcore first

Well, he asked for a solution with gstreamer, so obviously Mplayer can't be that solution. But, like you say, xvid should be installed. As David found out, divx4linux is binary only. And it's from April 2003. That sucks.

xvidcore-1.0.3 is from December 2004, so that's not that much better. They have a 1.1 beta release that's been out since April. Actually, reading the mailing lists a little, apparently the main developer, Edouard Gomez, dropped off the project right after the beta release.

As I recall, DivX and XviD are spawned from the same open source code. DivX decided to close up and make some money out of it. But, I've read that quality wise they are pretty much on par.

Roll on with a multimedia hint someone...please
doom9.net has a pretty solid section of their forum about Linux A/V. Here's the website: http://forum.doom9.org/forumdisplay.php?s=35a40e28ac67696c54007ca597d38775&f=63 Take a look at the 3 stickies, particularly the Linux Audio/Video FAQ. A lot of the site is devoted to video encoding, which you might not be interested in. Still, a nice overview of your available options.
