Welcome, and a friendly warning. Distrubing the sleeping dragons here
with pointed or ceaseless questioning is not appreciated. There is the
faq, the book, and google. Come here when you are stuck :-).
As to your questions, afaik they are compile time dependencies, split
betweek required and optionals. The required are just that - the compile
barfs without them.
The optionals are for extra function: Building documentation, running
tests, displaying more formats. Some of the optionals aren't really
optional at all, e.g. libjpeg to use jpeg pictures. Try surfing without
that :-o. As a general rule, sticking in libraries first helps once
you have a network link up.
You can run with no optionals, but you may have to do
./configure --without-anything-useful to get through.
