I used 'patch -p0 -i' from the top-level directory. Here's what happened:
[~/build/wmaker/WindowMaker-0.92.0]$ patch -p0 -i contrib/single_click.diff
patching file WPrefs.app/Expert.c
patching file src/WindowMaker.h
Hunk #1 succeeded at 475 with fuzz 2 (offset 3 lines).
patching file src/appicon.c
patching file src/defaults.c
Hunk #1 succeeded at 553 (offset -9 lines).
patching file src/dock.c
patching file src/icon.c
