If you install FAM or Gamin before you install gnome menu's the menu should update straight away. If you're not running FAM or Gamin, it's like you say, you have to log out to update the menu. Incidentally, if you build gnome-menus against Gamin and then uninstall it and use FAM, you'll need to reinstall gnome-menus as it breaks the gnome panel. Gnome-menus sets a compile time flag, FAMNoExists, according to whether you're using FAM or Gamin. If you install Gamin over FAM, that works OK, but not the other way around.
