I used to keep Acrobat around for the same reason, but I just started using evince in combination with mozplugger http://mozplugger.mozdev.org/ for Firefox. Their configuration file already includes entries for evince. Still not as nice as a natively written plugin, but it works pretty well, and now I have absolutely no need for Acrobat Reader.
