I just want to tell you that I found a font suitable
for use with kiten.
I installed then kochi-substitute font which you can
get for example here:
http://osdn.dl.sourceforge.jp/efont/5411/

After extraction I put the both .ttf files in
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF/
and kiten now shows kanji characters.
