As I said, I've never used package-users, so I don't know what an
install dir is.  However, there are people on this list who've done
GNOME with package-users, and I recall it's a pain.  Maybe start a new
thread under the subject "GNOME package-users blah blah blah".  You
might get some more replies.  Also, search the blfs-support archives
for GNOME package users.  You should get some hits over the past 6
months of people in this situation.
