Hope I've got this right for netiquette since it's the first time I've replied to any mailing list. Please let me know if I haven't.
GIMP 2.2.8 can save images in in pgm format. Choose File->Save As, and then click the "Select File Type (By Extension)" option, scroll down the resulting list until you see the PGM image option, selecct this then click on save and you can run from there. This on LFS 6.1 & BLFS 6.1 running GNOME 2.10.1 and, I think, without the netpbm package installed. Hope this helps.
