Hi, there! Try imagemagick's convert command if netpbm is too complicated. Other than that, I'd be pretty interested whether you tried ocre, ocrad or gocr (of course the latter accepts jpgs, so you wouldn't need pgm images) and what your actual results were. My last tests weren't too successful, a recognition rate of less than 60% for the average 300dpi grayscale scan renders all the packages mostly useless. None of them uses trigrams or dictionary checks, only claraocr (was last updated in 2003) and xplab (last release in January) have learning abilities, but are way too complicated for everyday's use ATM AFAIK. Anyway, I wish you more luck than I had.
