Thanks /etc/resolv.conf was not properly configured I now feel stupid.

Can you ping your dns servers in /etc/resolv.conf?
i.e ping -c1 nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn
If they belong to an isp and you can't ping them, is the router
connected? Dhclient can log into modems without the modem being
