Hi Rainer Peter Feller, (and the rest of the list)

Thanks for testing my problem. I have given the problem some more thought, and 
i believe (but don't know for sure) that the files that are copied while they 
shouldn't be copied are created in windows 2000

i indeed have no normal mountoptions:
/dev/hda4      /            ext3   defaults        1     1
/dev/hda5       /d      vfat    defaults,uid=101,gid=100,umask=077        0 0

The user who wants to rsync is root, the filesystem is mounted by root

Thanks again for testing, at least we know rsync can work properly :-)
