Hello,

I am having similar issues with Arts and XMMS talking to my Nforce2
AC97 driver. I have tried all possible kernel configurations,
including modular ALSA (letting hotplug find the devices), modular OSS
emulated ALSA, modular native OSS, and have tried all three with
kernel built-in configurations as well. With the modular
configuration, I tried running alsaconf but it couldn't find the "snd"
module, so I tried to use some of the configuration i remembered
seeing in BLFS-5.1 with regard to /etc/modules.conf. This seemed to
get all the right devices loaded, but still the errors with Arts, and
XMMS cant access the sound card. I tried killing arts as suggested,
as well and running from a terminal. With arts killed, xmms doesn't
produce the error but it still doesn't play. I do notice that in the
XMMS ALSA configuration that 2 sound cards show up, each yeilding the
same bad results. I even verified that alsa detects its own drivers
by running alsamixer, which works properly. The "alsactl store" also
works during bootup.
With LFS-5.1.1 w/BLFS-5.1 I could get sound to work. It works in
Slackware 10.1 as well. I even tried to use the BLFS-5.1 instructions
for my LFS-6.1.1 build but got the same results. The only unique
factors here seem to be udev/hotplug and the Linux-2.6 kernel itself.
Does anyone else reproduce this problem? My LFS-6.x builds are very
clean and snappy so far except for this annoying little sound thing.

Thanks a bunch!
