Hard to trim this, so I'll leave as it. Right, having battled with 2.10 _and_ 2.12, both crashing, I reread your email, and noticed you had to install firefox, so I reinstalled 2.10 with a Debian patch and using: --with-mozilla=firefox instead of the default mozilla, and voila, it worked.
