I have an LFS based system and I have hit a really weird problem when I mess
with zlib. Without getting into all of the details why, I ended up doing a
reinstall of zlib 1.2.3 (note that there wasn't any problem with the original
zlib installation). When it got to the install phase and zlib-1.2.3.so was
overwritten, a whole bunch of applications crashed. I rebooted the machine,
and after that, everything seemed to work fine, but I've been trying to
figure out why it happened. If I run the install phase again, when it
overwrites the library with an identical library, things still go crazy. To
give you an idea of what happens, I run it from a konsole in KDE and I get
stuff like the konsole crashing, windows losing their decorations, and the
deskbar crashing when I try to launch something. Also, if I hit ctrl-alt-f1
to go to a terminal, I get a weird graphical mess on the screen instead of
the terminal. There doesn't appear to be any problem with the library itself
since everything is fine after a reboot, and I can't figure out how these
applications even notice that zlib has been overwritten (they should just be
looking at the copy they have loaded into memory). Does anybody have any
clue of what to investigate? I have never seen anything like this with a
different library (even glibc), but it is consistently happening with zlib
and google searches haven't been any help.
