Something strange has happened and I don't know where. The original
message I sent didn't come back to me and I received none of the
responses. Also I've been getting some of the same posts over and over
like "Where to go with BLFS"--or whatever the thread is--I've received
for the last three days in a row. Anyway, whilst I was looking for
something else in the archives I discovered the nine replies. Let me
address the pertinent ones.

What user you're logged on as in an xterm should have absolutely nothing
to do with your ability to copy-and-paste to and from an xterm. I just
booted the 6.1.1-2 livecd and have no problems pasting between firefox
and an xterm (logged on as the lfs user). Can you please describe
*exactly* how you're trying to copy from firefox and copy to an xterm
(every mouse movement, every keypress)?
My face is very red at this moment. I rechecked the default xorg.conf
and 3 button emulation was set to "false." I have a Synaptics TouchPad
on my laptop and need that emulation. Setting it to "true" solved my
problem.

There is no need to change anything about the livecd startup - it works
fine as it is.
I'd like to modify the livecd to boot as I would like it to. This
project is not integral to building LFS on the laptop, but is one that
will increase my knowlege. What I'd like to do is boot the cd and have
a login prompt come up. At that point, I can log in as lfs, startx and
go my merry way.
I did a little more digging and found that the files I must modify are
/etc/{inittab, passwd,group,shadow} The livecd /etc/inittab, for run
levels [2-5], calls openvt which executes a script called livecd-login.
This script gives the greeting and then executes 'login -f root' I
changed the inittab for runlevel 3 to the agetty call from the [B]LFS
configuration. I thought that running telinit rescanned the inittab
file and changed things, but apparently I was wrong. I couldn't get out
of having 'root' come up.

This problem is finally solved on the 6.1.1-1 and later LiveCD's.
Since we use XFCE we also setup XFCE Terminal, so now there is a helpful
menu to copy/paste! Cuts down a lot on support questions. Even I
forget how to copy/paste in xterm after a while.
This is the other problem that I have with livecd. I must use twm if I
don't want to be able to take a nap each time I refocus the xfce
terminal after I've worked in Firefox. Sometimes it's so bad that the
screen won't respond to CTRL-ALT-Backspace and I have to use the power
button.
Don't get me wrong. Livecd is working OK for me. I'd just like to get
these other things ironed out in case they have to do with something in
my laptop. For example, I think I must disable DRI for the video card I
have. That's the end of another research trail.
Thanks to all for the responses.
