This command should read the files it finds in the directory
$XDG_DATA_DIRS/applications/
and create a file called mimeinfo.cache in that dir.
So, what is the content of $XDG_DATA_DIRS?
Probably "/usr/share".
And, is there a directory /usr/share/applications ?
Are there *.desktop files in that directory ?
Perhaps, are you using the pkg-user hint as a package management system?
In this case, are you issuing the command as root?
