I've seen the USB low performance driver disrupt the usb mass storage driver. If CONFIG_BLK_DEV_UB is enabled in the kernel disable it. You will find it in the Device Drivers -> Block devices section as the low performance usb driver. If it isn't enabled, then I'm out of ideas.
