Is that what you're > seeing? Anything that was using GTK2 had badly rendered, blurry fonts. I backed up freetype and fontconfig (in both /usr and /usr/X11R6) and then built and installed Freetype-2.1.10 and Fontconfig-2.3.2. I installed Fontconfig twice, once in /usr and once in /usr/X11R6. This is almost certainly not the best thing to do, it should probably be done with symlinks in /usr/X11R6 pointing to the actual libraries in /usr/lib and the headers in /usr/include, but I didn't want to take any risks. My fonts are now fine.
