Many thanks for your replies, you were dead right, I read through the link to chapter 3 far too fast. Its works now :)
One thing though, when I boot from the livecd and type "startx" after the greeting my monitor goes on standby. I was told it was because of the graphics card ive got..... nvidia mx420 (gf4)
But if I type "linux expert" (thats me!) before the cd loads up, then "startx" at the greeting I can go into xfce.
Does anyone know what happens when I type linux expert that changes things? Im having difficulty in getting the nvidia drivers to work and was wondering if it would be easier to do whatever is done after I type linux expert. I keep getting an error on installing the drivers about not being able to load nvidia.ko.....
