I don't know about the KDE stuff, but I recognize that kind of statement. The default for ALSA is to use the dmix (Google it) plugin to allow multiple programs to access the soundcard simultaneously. This isn't the default for me on my old card for reasons I don't understand. Maybe I configured it wrong, I don't know. Anyway, in the XMMS settings for ALSA, try to specify device=dmix. I don't remember what the settings dialog looks like, though.
