Yes, undoubtedly a version problem - glib, gtk, pango, and atk need "matching" versions (but they all make their own decisions about numbering). The svn version of BLFS has gtk+-2.8.16 with glib-2.10.1, atk-1.11.3, and pango-1.12.0, so it is safe to assume that these have been tested together.
