Oops, I didn't even realize that udftools was in the book.  Well have
to get a patch in the book for gcc-4.  Anyway, here's how you work
with the debian patch.  Just to note, almost everything in the debian
diff.gz is debian related.  The patch you want is inside that diff. 
Here goes.

First, fetch the diff
ftp://ftp.debian.org/debian/pool/main/u/udftools/udftools_1.0.0b3-9.diff.gz

Unpack udftools and enter the directory.  Now, you can first
decompress the diff with gunzip, or just pipe the uncompressed output
into patch.  Going the second route:

zcat ../udftools_1.0.0b3-9.diff.gz | patch -Np1

Now the whole debian directory is unpacked, including the patch you
want.  Now, issue the command

patch -Np0 -i debian/patch-3-wrudf-gcc4.diff

You should be good to go after that.  I'll open a bug about this.
