Matthew Carson wrote:Hi again ! I don't use GNOME so am not that bothered - but here goes : when Gnome starts up and the deskop appears, a Question window appears. No buttons or text appear inside it, and pressing ENTER or ESC does nothing ! At the same time, the main menus (application, places, desktop do nothing when they're clicked on) If I right-click, close it - and choose Force Quit - the desktop refreshes and the Question dialog returns ! Double clicking on System icon on desktop, returns this error window : Can't display "system:///" any guesses ? THx !Hi Matthew I had the same problem, here is what I found out: The gnome-mixer-applet is missing ! Thats why gnome-panel (or gnome-menu - don't know for sure) is showing an error-dialog, which is broken... There are several ways to fix this: 1. Install the missing applet ( sounds easy, but I didn't manage to do so, because of some missing libraries or something ^^) 2. You can move a folder with config-files to a backup directory (thats what I did): as root: mkdir ~/mixer-applet-bak && mv $GNOME_PREFIX/share/gnome-applets/mixerapplet ~/applet-bak Im not really sure where to find the mixer-applet-dir so be careful with this, it's just a guess ! You probably have to search for it. I hope this hint helps -- Johannes
