Do you mean gcc-4.1 (and glibc-2.4)?  If you have a pure64 setup, you
can check out paldo.  The setup is very similar to CLFS, and Jürg's
been building gnome-2.14 on gcc-4.1 and glibc-2.4 for a while now.

I've gleaned quite a few nice things for base x86 for desktop

Thanks dan looks promising.   theres another issue tho its with
nautilus no matter what i do its make file is failing to find a file
that ive verifyed is there.

here is the important output
