Sorry for not answering earlier. I use the xine backend as that is
what the Totem devs use as the default, and claim in their docs to
be better supported. If they say that, why would anyone use anything
other than what they recommend? :-)

That's true.  I guess I'm trying to buy into a gstreamer only media
backend.  It seems ridiculous to install two separate ones.  Maybe
I'll install xine-lib as a stopgap until gstreamer gets up to speed.
Totem is probably my main use of gstreamer, after all.

All in all, I like Totem because it makes it easy and comfortable
for me to watch movies on the PC. And that's what it's all about,
right? :-)

It sure does.  A very nice application, but I have a soft spot for the
eye candy, too.
