They fooled me.  I have:

$ glxinfo
name of display: :0.0
display: :0  screen: 0
direct rendering: Yes
server glx vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation
...

It appears that they fool xorg too.  Do we really have a terminology
problem or is the capability just implemented differently.
