With --disable-docs the issue persisted. That's because the HASDOCBOOK/USEDOCBOOK check macro in configure doesn't fall under --disable-docs for some reason. Hmm, no. --disable-docs should null out DOCSRC and DOCMAN3 variables. Then the docbook stuff wouldn't get built.
