Hi all,
I've got few questions that I'd like to see cleared concerning {B}LFS
installation of a machine.
First, how can you update a LFS system, keeping all config ?
Does this steps ensure that it will work :
- Boot on a liveCD that complies with LFS installation,
- mount all filesystems that are required,
- Erase all directories that contains programs (/usr, /bin, /sbin, /lib)
- start the LFS and the continue with BLFS

To me, the best way to update is to install over the old binaries.
And if things start getting too messy, then I just start fresh on a
completely new system. But that's me.

When I did this, I went through the LFS6.1 and BLFS-svn books, but I remember
having someone here telling me that the svn versions could have been a better
choice.

That was me, and yes it is a good choice. Both the books are on the
verge of cutting releases, anyway.

So, since I can't update kde, and since I need programs I can't
compile, I'm looking forward to re-install my whole machine.
I've been told that my problem could come from a broken memory, but I've
passed all to memtest86, and no error was found....

That's good, since the software is free, but the hardware isn't.

As for kde, why isn't the process of installing this using the konstruct
toolset covered by the book ?

Someone just asked the same question about jhbuild (or maybe garnome),
which is the equivalent tool in Gnome. They probably should be
mentioned in the book. But if you use Konstruct, that pretty much
makes the BLFS book useless. Supposedly, you are building your
LFS/BLFS system because you want to do it yourself.

I know that it does not complies with BLFS which installs all packages
independently, but it could be helpful to - at least - have a tip on how to
use it safely.
If I have time, I can write a hint on how to do this, but do you think that it
will be useful ?

I'll put a mention of it in the book, but if you really want to show
how to use it, you may want to write the hint. I'll talk to Randy
about it since he seemed agreeable with putting links to jhbuild in
the book.
