I had this problem with kdm a while back, and it turned out to be a font
problem. After installing the fonts in /usr/share/fonts everything worked
Installing fonts into /usr/share/fonts is not the solution. The correct
solution is to properly configure fontconfig, as described in BLFS.
In any case, I doubt that's the problem in this case. What is the output
of "ldd /opt/kde-3.4.1/bin/artsd"?
