This is exactly what happens when I try to use mplayer (gmplayer)

[EMAIL PROTECTED] gmplayer
MPlayer 1.0pre7try2-4.0.3 (C) 2000-2005 MPlayer Team

The mplayer userlist is filled with questions like this and although it
is great software, it does require some effort from the users to get
familiar with it.
You're right, it has something to do with the codecs, not your udev
link. This is easy to verify since an MPEG stream has been detected.
(Although you didn't seem to pass any options on the commandline, I
doubt it is reading an mpeg stream from stdin)
At first the 'video output device' or '-vo' X11 is used, and the
videocodec libdv is being used to try and read the MPEG-PS stream. No
audiocodec or -ao is required, because no audiostream has been detected
in your movie.
Before even starting playback, the X11 video-output is being replaced by
xv (which is odd, but xv is faster than the general X11 so it's probably
an optimization effort). Then it requires some sort of prescaling, which
it chokes on.

If you're looking for support on the mplayer list, the first thing
they'll tell you is to get the current from subversion. 1.0pre7try2 is
almost a whole year old and a lot of bugs have been fixed since then.

From the mplayer webpage:

Given how old pre7 is by now, it's strongly recommended to upgrade. We also recommend users to test and use the Subversion version when possible in order to both benefit from latest development, and report/fix bugs. Contrary to running a development kernel, it won't eat your data or make your cat pregnant, but it will help us improve the overall quality of MPlayer.
