Looks like it first appears in 2.6.12 as "Intel HD Audio (NEW)".
So to return to my original question, isn't there a small hole in the
{B}LFS books? I installed from the stable LFS book v6.1.1, which uses
kernel version 2.6.11.12, which doesn't support Intel HD Audio. So I
was never going to get ALSA working without getting a more recent
version of the kernel, or installing the driver as a module. I can't
see anywhere in either the stable or development BLFS book where it
warns about this. (Apologies in advance if I've overlooked something.)
There are a number of different drivers (not just sound) that may not be
present in the kernel (both older versions like 2.6.11.x and the current
version). BLFS simply doesn't need to have information on every single
external driver you may need.
