I'm a bit behind with my mail but felt that Mark has a point here. There are a number of reasons why someone should want to build the alsa project's driver tar ball. Boot order of multiple sound cards and bug fixes are just a couple of additional examples.
In addition, you don't have to specify a particular driver ./configure && make && make install will install all the drivers within that tar ball. Of course, it's simple to specify the --with-cards=<card driver> switch.
