Hi, Arnie
I remember there was a patch about this in previous version
of BLFS book that is no more in the book because they switched
to libexif-0.6.13.
Try the patch or consider to switch to the newer version of libexif.

Hi Alex,
Thanks again. Version 0.6.13 did the trick. I only had
control-center to go to get GNOME up. I figured a half hour at the most.
Two hours later I finally got it up but at long last it is running and
hasn't crashed yet. :-) Now I have a few applications to get running and
I'll be ready to move onto my new workstation. My bet is I am going to
have a few more questions because I have seen other requests for help
with some of the apps I want to use like FireFox. We'll see. Thanks to
all for getting me this far.
Arnie
