Hi.

I can't give a solution for this, sorry. But I had this problem too. I tried 
some solutions: unset CFLAGS, apply patches from debian (has worked in other 
cases) and even recompiling libpng in other ways. Nothing. So I installed 
cups-1.2 and voilà, it worked at the first try, no problem. And now I can say 
that I'm happy that cups-1.1 failed, because cups-1.2 autodetected my printer 
through the net, which I consider a nice feature.
