Hi Simon, I started to look around last night as I have interests in
this area. Take a look at project Beryl (http://forum.beryl-project.org)
which is a fork of compiz.
You can now (apparently) run this with ONLY xorg 7.1 and the beta Nvidia
driver. No need for Xgl or AIGLX any more :-) I haven't tried this yet
but will very soon. Also it (beryl) seems to have removed a significant
(if not all) amount of the dependencies on Gnome...
