While not on (B)LFS, on my primary desktop, I am perfectly able to build
the nVidia module (latest stable 8774 and beta 9625) with gcc-4.1.1 and
kernel-2.6.18 (This is gentoo running here, but I don't think that
matters)

I never saw the nVidia module break (unlike ATI's driver which usually
needs manual attention after kernel (or gcc) upgrades).

Are you using nVidia's installer? What's the error message?
