I think the problem is not related to the running kernel. As I know,
the configure scripts of some old sources, do not suport new host type
such as "i686-*". So if the package you are bulding is too old, try to
use the latest version first.

OK somewhere I messed up. I rebuilt the kernel as I found there were
a few networking items that I hadn't configured. Now I get "invalid
host type" when building a package and config.sub checks the "build
system type".

Where do I fix this? I haven't any idea.
