so in principle you have done everything ... you should have told that
from the beginning :-)

for the question whether to comlile them into the kernel or build them
as modules I can only say "Yes, build them into the kernel or as
modules :-)"

if you just do an "ifconfig" you will not see non active ethers ...
"ifconfig -a" will show you everything
and iwconfig will show you all ethers with wireless estensions
do you have wireless_tools installed?
