Yeah, alsaconf is not really useful, and I think it's actually
deprecated. If you have the right kernel pieces built, then you should
just need to get the mixer setup.

Try the commands alsamixer or amixer to try getting the volume set
correctly on the channels. Then the program speaker-test can be used
to see if everything's working.
