Thanks Michael,  I ended up reoving the following files or directories:

     /ec/X11
     /usr/X11R6
     /usr/include/X11
     /usr/GL

Xorg 7.1 refused to continue building with old /usr/include/X11 and 
/usr/include/GL.  After that, the build went on smoothly and the i945GL chip 
set was recognized.  I got dri working now.
