Hi everybody, 686-pc-linux-gnu, kernel 2.6.20.7 libpcap-0.9.4, ppp-2.4.3, net-tools-1.60, rp-pppoe-3.5, openssl-0.9.7g, ntp-4.2.0
Networking (and indeed the whole system) running smoothly. PROBLEM Upgraded to the brand-new 2.6.21. Everything fine, EXCEPT the system crashes after connecting to Internet over the DSL line. SYMPTOM In one of its simpler manifestations: 1. []$ pppoe-start ... Connected! 2. []$ lynx http://www.linuxfromscratch.org 3. At this point the machine hangs with the BSD (Black Screen of Death). # The frozen screen shows 24 lines: BUG: at arch/i386/kernel/smp.c:546 smp_call_function() [<c010d965>] smp_call_function+0x125/0x130 [<........>] ... (Twenty lines of this nature) [<c0341570>] unknown_bootoption+0x0/0x240 ======================= ATTEMPTS TO FIX THE SITUATION Switch back to the tried and true 2.6.20.7 Upgrade five software packages to libpcap-0.9.5, ppp-2.4.4, rp-pppoe-3.8, openssl-0.9.8e and ntp-4.2.0a (per BLFS Development procedures). Unfortunately, on switching to 2.6.21, THE PROBLEM REAPPEARS. Any thoughts?
