This might actually be a better choice since some utilities might have the paths to coreutils utilities hard-coded. For instance, I'm pretty sure something if diffutils does this. So, things might break if you move the coreutils from where they are now.
Many thanks to you guys, you really know your stuff. Well I'm considering what to do. As I've installed sound utils and web access stuff and now preparing to install the Gnome. So, I'm thinking, it might be better to scrap it and start again as I'd like it right. I did make a copy of the tool chain as advised. But if I start the GUI, it'll be beyond the point of no return.
