I think the biggest issue I've found is lack of clarity over versions, particularly during the 7.2 development cycle, during which development was also going on on work that wouldn't make 7.2 (input hotplug in particular). It was quite difficult to establish whether a given tarball was part of the imminent 7.2, or the much further off 7.3. Of course, the actual releases are nicely tagged and organised in versioned directories. But if you're trying to preview any of this stuff - or even just keep individual packages up to date - it's quite a pain. The distro guys probably don't have a problem since they work full-time on this kind of stuff, but it's quite hard for individuals to track... Simon.
