My wife and son have been out of town the last few days, so I've been
keeping myself busy by building LFS and BLFS from the dev book.
Everything has gone very smoothly and it's mostly done at this point.
Going through the BLFS packages that I need I noticed a couple of things
that I thought I'd point out for comment.
First the download link for xscreensaver-4.24 is no longer valid. I
found the latest version, 5.04 I think, instead and it compiled without
a problem using the commands shown for 4.24. So maybe somebody should
update the version in the book?
Second, I prefer XFCE for my Windows Manger on my home computer. It's
lightweight, looks good, is very flexible and easy to use. And since
it's a home computer I don't need everything that GNOME offers.
The dev book shows the build process for version 4.2 and they are now up
to 4.4.1 on the XFCE website. The new version requires a few additional
packages, Python, the URI::URL Perl package and VTE, but once I went
through those installs XFCE 4.4 built without a hitch. In fact, I used
a slightly modified version of the build process described for XOrg 7.2
to build each XFCE package in order. That may be a good thing to show
in the dev book if anyone is interested in updating that section.
Anyway, that's it. Next up for me is to build the JDK so keep your
fingers crossed.
Great work, everyone.
